#Spotlight Making The First Move by @ReeseRyanWrites #BloggerBookFair

Today I've been chatting with the lovely author Reese Ryan as part of the Blogger Book Fair running this week. Make her feel at home and leave a comment for your chance to win 1 of 2 $10 gift cards.

On to the interview.

Q1) Can you tell us a little about yourself
I’m a freelance writer and a social media manager. My background is in non-profit administrative support and talent acquisition. I’m a native Ohioan currently residing in North Carolina and adjusting to Southern living. I love music, literature and the arts. So I have way too many books, CDs, and MP3s. I make it to the art museum whenever I can.

Q2) Lovely to meet you, Reese. So have you always wanted to be an author?
Since middle school. I was already a voracious reader, but reading Jane Austen’s book, Pride & Prejudice made me want to become a storyteller.

Q3) Pride & Prejudice, huh? I bet I know the answer to the next question. J Who are some of your favorite writers? Who do you feel has influenced your writing?
I’ve got a thing for authors named Jane. I love Jane Austen’s witty heroines who defy convention, and the crazy family dynamics in her stories. Both frequently appear in my stories. I adore the self-deprecating humor of Jane Green’s heroines. They’re always less-than-perfect and a bit quirky. Those are typically traits you’ll find in my heroines, as well.

Q4) It's good to know yu enjoy writing about less-than-perfect characters who defy convention. I enjoy reading about them. Can you tell us what a typical writing day for you is like.
I’m really bad with this—a feast or famine kind of girl. I can go for a month or two not writing anything. But then I’ll participate in NaNo and get a 90,000+ word novel written in two months. Ideally I like to get up early and write when my mind is fresh. I need to sketch out the scene I’ll be working on—if not on paper, at least in my head. I’ve found I write much faster this way.

Q5) I go through feast or famine stages too. Which bring me to the next question. Let’s talk about your new book.  Can you tell us a little about it?
It’s a friends-to-lovers contemporary romance about two people who are struggling with the past in a way that jeopardizes their futures—both as individuals and as a couple. My heroine, Melanie Gordon, has spent the past several years throwing herself into her work after the death of her father and an awful breakup.  As a result she excels in her career, but her romantic life and her relationship with her family is in shambles. The hero—Raine  Mason—is a sexy, selfless philanthropist. But he has a dark secret that threatens to destroy his chance of finding happiness with Melanie.

Q6) Ooh, sounds interesting. How did you come up with the idea for this story?
Two thoughts came to mind. The first was that “settling down” could be considered a double entendre when a person marries someone who isn’t what they truly wanted or deserve. The second was that we often have unrealistic expectations in relationships—making disappointment inevitable. My heroine struggles with unreasonable expectations for herself and for her relationships.

Q7) What is up next for you?
In Making the First Move we meet Jamie Charles—Melanie’s best friend since childhood. Jamie gets her own story, entitled Love Me Not. The story will be published by Carina Press on December 30th. Next month I’ll be proposing another related story to my editor at Carina Press. Then I’ll be editing two finished manuscripts—one of which will be a new adult trilogy.

Q8) Best wishes for all your projects! What is the best piece of advice you would give to a budding writer?
Never give up your dream. There are so many options available for writers now. If you truly want this, keep working to improve your craft. Learn as much as you can about all of the options. Choose the one that’s right for you and for that specific project.

Q9) Great Advice. What is the next book on your To Read Pile that you are dying to jump into?
I have a HUGE TBR pile, but the next book I’m dying to read is Killing Sarai by J.A. Redmerski. I loved her book The Edge of Never. This book is very different, but I love her voice and the story is dark and intriguing. So I’m excited to begin reading it.
